Strong support towards Civil Society Declaration adopted at Hamburg Conference

The Civic Solidarity Platform (CSP) – a network of over 80 human rights NGOs from Europe, the former Soviet Union and North America – organized the seventh so-called OSCE Parallel Civil Society Conference in Hamburg on 6-7 December 2016.

The over 100 participants in the two-day conference discussed alarming human rights trends in the OSCE region and adopted a set of Civil Society Recommendations to OSCE participating States, institutions and field offices, as well as the Hamburg Declaration on Protecting Civil Society Space.

These outcome documents were handed over to OSCE Chairperson-in-Office and German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Austrian Deputy Foreign Minister Michael Linhart representing the incoming 2017 OSCE Chairmanship, OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Dunja Mijatovic and ODIHR’s First Deputy Director Katrazyna Jarosiecicz-Wargan at the closing session of the conference.

The recommendations endorsed at Parallel Civil Society Conference attracted a lot of attention and the work of the CSP was applauded by participants in the OSCE Ministerial Council meeting. In particular, the Hamburg Declaration on Protecting Civil Society Space received strong support.
