Supporting Freedom of Expression in Eurasia

Permanent surveillance, threats, imprisonment, and working in conflict environments are just a few of the hurdles to free expression faced by journalists in Eurasia. The S.A.F.E. (Securing Access to Freedom of Expression) Initiative’s Georgian Center staff are helping to mitigate these challenges by training journalists from Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Belarus in safety techniques, identity and risk management.

Since the center was established in 2013, 45 full-time journalists, freelancers, and bloggers who were threatened or at high risk (due to working on human rights, corruption, politics, conflicts and investigations) have received S.A.F.E. training and access to individual risk mitigation plans.

Implemented by IREX and funded by the US Department of State Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor (DRL), S.A.F.E. provides journalists with psychosocial care, addresses the challenge of changing habits in digital and physical safety, and provides coping strategies for stress.
