Azerbaijan: Ashton and Füle concerned at changes in NGO law

EU High Representative Catherine Ashton and Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Štefan Füle issued a joint statement on Thursday, the 12th of February 2014, voicing concern over the amendments to NGO legislation in Azerbaijan. The statement describes the amendments as “restricting the environment for an independent and critical civil society, especially in the field of human rights and democracy.”

Taking into consideration the country’s upcoming chairmanship of the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers, Ashton and Füle called on the Azerbaijani authorities to respect their international commitments and facilitate the registration procedures for NGOs, as well as create a supporting environment for the NGO sector.
