Romania is a country located at the crossroads of Southeastern and Central Europe, on the Lower Danube, North of the Balkan Peninsula and the Western shore of the Black Sea. Romania shares a border with Hungary and Serbia to the West, Ukraine and Moldova to the Northeast and East, and Bulgaria to the South. The capital of Romania is Bucharest.

Romania is a unitary, semi-presidential republic, member state in NATO since 2004, and the European Union since 2007. Also, it is a member of the United Nations, OSCE, WTO and BSEC.

In 2018, the status of civic space, in accordance with the CIVICUS Monitor Platform – which defines civic space in terms of the degree of respect of the rights of association, peaceful assembly and of expression – is defined as ‘Narrowed’ in 2018 in Romania.
