Grants to Support Social Enterprises in Ukraine

n late July East Europe Foundation (EEF) awarded grants as a part of its Support for social enterprise development in Ukraine. Funds were provided through the mechanism which starting April 2012 Erste Bank Ukraine and East Europe Foundation (EEF) offer in the form of loan and grant for social enterprises. Entrepreneurs whose main aim is to solve social problems now can get more available funding to develop both commercial and social components of their business. EEF awarded grants to social entrepreneurs with the funding from the U.S. Agency of International Development (USAID) and American Chamber of Commerce.

Lviv NGO “Oselya” will develop an internship program for clients residing in local homeless shelters and social dormitory and teach them professional and interpersonal skills at a furniture renovation workshop. Informational materials designed during the classes will be used to inform residents about the organization and the workshop’s products. Oselya will organize site visits for media to the workshop to increase citizens’ awareness of social entrepreneurship, while representatives of NGOs willing to establish social-based enterprises will be invited for a short-term internship in the workshop to learn about the principles of successful social entrepreneurship.

Another grantee, NGO EcoSvit, will work to create new opportunities for families with children with cerebral palsy using the mechanism of social entrepreneurship. The NGO will increase the quality of the services provided to these families through launching specially equipped playing room for children with cerebral palsy and establishing a school for their parents where they can receive trainings and consultations at nedical rehab centre “Zdorovya” which was established by EccoSvit. Additionally, EcoSvit will equip premises including kitchen and dining room for the out-of-town families that receive rehabilitation services at the grantee’s social enterprise. The NGO will organize trainings for local non-government organizations to promote social entrepreneurship concept in the community, and will publish related articles in the local media. The grant is being provided as part of a loan and grant program launched by Erste Bank and East Europe Foundation and which is funded by AmCham and USAID.

Co-financing of social entrepreneurs by East Europe Foundation and Erste Bank is a part of “Support for social enterprise development in Ukraine” project. The project is aimed to develop the idea of social entrepreneurship in the Ukrainian society. Project partners, British Council in Ukraine, East Europe Foundation, PricewaterhouseCoopers Ukraine, Erste Bank and the International Renaissance Foundation, offer training for social business and provide business, legal, and financial advice to social entrepreneurs. Besides that in 2011 the competition for the best social business development plan was conducted, and the winner received a loan from Erste Bank.
